Homeless, needy find compassion and help with aid of The Community Foundation

SAN BERNARDINO - The number of homeless and needy families showing up at Cornerstone Compassion Center for a bag of groceries has jumped about 30 percent in the past two years.

It's a familiar story for charity groups around the country as the economy continues to struggle.

"In the last two years, we've definitely seen more working families that are having to rely upon us for help," said Robin Hyde, executive director for the center.

But a group that helps charities - The Community Foundation - actually had the best fundraising year in its 70-year history in 2011. And that's good news for organizations such as Cornerstone, which has received about $1,800 from the foundation in the last 18 months.

of that donation translates to around 2,400 boxes of cereal, or two months of keeping the food pantry's refrigerators and freezers running, Hyde said.

The Community Foundation, which serves San Bernardino and Riverside counties, raised $9.1 million in grants and donations last year.

The foundation connects financial donors with charities. It distributes grant money to nonprofit groups and scholarships to students, and funds various projects centering on the arts, family and health, among other issues.

Foundation CEO Daniel Foster said the 2008 stock-market crash forced the organization to re-examine its business model.

They've received support from the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to examine why other areas of Southern California receive a higher level of grants than the Inland Empire.

Foundation officials have gathered economic and quality-of-life data for the region to make their case for why more grants are needed for local charities.

"We are working on developing grant initiatives to develop more and better grants for our region," Foster said.

They've also begun working with partners such as the High Desert Resource Network to train their members in

fundraising, grant writing and leadership development.

They're also planning to gather local leaders to collaborate on how to improve the quality of life in the Inland Empire and address how areas such as education, environment, arts and culture can be improved.

"It takes more than money to really solve a variety of quality of life issues in this region," Foster said. "It takes vision, and it takes collaboration."

Investing In Gold Funds ? Buying Silver As Investment in Lawrence ...

Another drawback to buying gold is the fact that this could cause an increase in costs associated with the storage with the said gold. Unfortunately, you can find usually no dividends that may accrue in order to carter for this cost of storage.
Before you do anything whatsoever else, make certain you understand what are you doing available in the market. This won?t only apply to silver. Additionally, it pertains to other items like website marketing, off-line marketing, establishing our regular business, reselling anything, etc. Once you learn what?s happening available in the market, you may always remain on the surface of everything and you will never overpay for your product. For example:
In the old days the typical ended up being to have Ten percent of one?s portfolio in precious metals. The times have changed plus a more realistic percentage could be Fifty percent or more. It is usually a good idea to remember that the buzz can be your friend, and at this time the trend is changing to gold investing!

Investing in gold and silver coins such as gold and silver coins can be carried out by buying things that are constructed with them. Most of which include jewelry, coins, bars or bullions. These can be found in legitimate stores and over the internet. Dealers, traders, jewelers, and mints have them in some pieces or in bulk.
For people who are retired or are searching for any firm source to purchase must stay updated to gold news. This helps them in making a wise decision and help them earn easily. There are numerous benefits which are associated directly with all the gold investment.

Gold is correlated inversely using the dollar. That is, whenever the dollar turn weak then there is anxiety about further downslides inside it, the interest in gold investment increases.
Gold and silver coins investments are already noted to remain constant or even boost in value over trades and exchanges. When most currencies have fallen through the economic turmoil of history couple of years, gold, silver, along with other precious metals failed to depreciate in value. In reality, they appear to be even increasing in value. If there are times which it would decrease, it?s almost never noticeable. Besides, its value is based on the good and the bad with the economy as well as the stock market. The true value of gold is oftentimes not stated.
This can be caused by the increasing interest in these metals as well as the scarcity of supply mounted on them. You will find sources worldwide for important metals and minerals however the danger of mining such deposits and also the costs involved ensures they are more costly and valuable. The expense cover manpower, equipments, storage, and conversion into materials which may be used.
It?s certainly a very important thing more and more and more people are embracing metals because the foundation their investments and that we can only hope which they retain these metals investments. Previously there has been something of the tendency for people to leap into gold and silver investing during times of crisis, and then profit when the American dollar begins to require a turn for that better.

Expert Home Stager Gives Advice for Networking at Open Houses ...

?

PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 14, 2012 -
While there are numerous ways for home stagers to market their services to real estate agents, expert home stager Debra Gould reports that one of the most effective methods is attending open houses. On her blog, the Home Staging Business Report, Gould gives advice to home stagers for approaching real estate agents at open houses.

?It?s important to be clear in your own mind about what you?re there for and what you want to accomplish,? says Gould. ?This will keep you focused and channel your energies in the right direction. Otherwise, you can say the wrong thing and end up with an angry REALTOR?.?

Gould, who founded the Staging Diva Home Staging Business Training Program, also suggests that home stagers ensure that they are not taking time away from an agent?s potential clients who are touring the home: ?While showing up at an open house gives you a captive audience, you don?t want to appear that you?re taking advantage of that or interfering with what the agent is really there for,? she says.

According to Gould, one of the objectives in attending an open house is to begin building a relationship with the real estate agent. Since this is typically the first face-to-face meeting, Gould emphasizes the importance of making the right first impression.

?You should have a professional, conversational-sounding way of introducing yourself,? recommends Gould. ?Practice this in advance so you sound confident when you say it, even if you?re brand new to home staging.?

In addition, Gould says it is important not to assume that the agent knows what home staging is or has ever worked with a home stager before. While the term home staging has existed for more than a decade, many agents are simply not familiar with it. Gould believes it is each home stager?s responsibility to explain who they are and what they do in a clear and compelling way.

Gould also recommends exchanging business cards and requesting the real estate agent?s permission to follow up with an email newsletter containing home staging tips.

Gould explains further: ?This is only the start of your relationship, so you need permission to build on that relationship and familiarity in the future. With ongoing communication, when they need your staging services in the future, you?ll still be ?top of mind.? If there isn?t any ongoing communication, the next time a project opportunity arises, it may go to your competition who has contacted them more recently.?

Gould finds that having a monthly newsletter is the easiest way to keep this communication open: ?It?s much less scary or intrusive than calling an agent to say ?Remember me?? A newsletter lets you market to them without being pushy,? says Gould.

For more home staging business tips, home stagers are encouraged to visit the Home Staging Business Report on the Staging Diva website.

Scripps College Professor Writes Book Examining Hidden History of Racial Segregation on 1950s ?American Bandstand?

CLAREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Matt Delmont, assistant professor of American studies at Scripps College, never questioned Dick Clark?s claim that ?American Bandstand? was racially integrated in the 1950s until Delmont?s research turned up new evidence. He wrote a book about the TV show because it was one of his mother?s favorites, and he grew up listening to her memories of ?American Bandstand.?

?My book explains how ?American Bandstand? shaped the image of American teenagers while also becoming a battleground for segregation and civil rights.?

?My research reveals how ?American Bandstand? discriminated against black youth during its early years and how black teens and civil rights advocates protested this discrimination,? Delmont says. ?My book explains how ?American Bandstand? shaped the image of American teenagers while also becoming a battleground for segregation and civil rights.?

In ?The Nicest Kids in Town: American Bandstand, Rock ?n? Roll, and the Struggle for Civil Rights in 1950s Philadelphia,? (University of California Press: 2012), Delmont asserts that ?American Bandstand,? the first national television program for teens, was out of step with desegregation. The book, released during Black History Month, also examines the civil rights activism of black deejays like Georgie Woods and Mitch Thomas, whose televised teen dance show debuted 15 years before ?Soul Train? and influenced the dance styles on ?American Bandstand.?

Delmont?s exhaustive research includes government reports, census data, high school yearbooks, photographs, songs, and other original sources. He also interviewed 21 individuals who grew up in Philadelphia and attended, watched, or protested the TV show.

The book will be released Feb. 24. To schedule an interview with Delmont, please call Rosa Maria Santana at 909-607-7177. Visit Delmont?s Web site to view early clips of ?American Bandstand.?

SAPAKOFF COLUMN: Stingrays vs. Chicago, and ECHL trends ...

Contrary to appearance, the South Carolina Stingrays have much in common with their opponent going into tonight?s ECHL game at North Charleston Coliseum.

For instance, the Chicago Express rolls into town from ?Second City? (never mind that New York rarely introduces itself as ?First City?) and Charleston is the second city on Travel and Leisure World?s list of top 10 cities in U.S. and Canada (just a Carnegie Deli sandwich behind ?First City?).

Chicago and Charleston claim comic actor Bill Murray.

The Stingrays and Express are in second place in their respective ECHL divisions. But they are marketing to audiences as different as Chicago dogs and Lowcountry boil. The Stingrays are old ECHL family, a throwback to the days when the league was pretty much confined to teams between Hampton Roads and Augusta (franchises now defunct).

Chicago, making its ECHL debut, represents a new trend in all minor league sports: franchises targeting themselves as an affordable entertainment option in big-city markets.

?There is a ton of competition in Chicago,? ECHL commissioner Brian McKenna said Thursday from the league office in Princeton, N.J. ?Not just for the hockey dollar, but for the entertainment dollar.?

That hasn?t stopped the 20-team ECHL from expanding into major markets: the San Francisco Bulls and Orlando Solar Bears join next season. There are ECHL teams in Cincinnati and Las Vegas, and right outside Los Angeles (Ontario) and Atlanta (Gwinnett).

Niche marketing

?To be honest, our results in major markets have been mixed,? McKenna said. ?We?ve had success in Gwinnett and Ontario. I think we?ve carved out a good niche in Las Vegas. In Cincinnati, it?s been a success, but we got off to a rough start.?

Small-market teams, beware.

While Chicago is last in the league in attendance (2,413 home average), the big-city foursome (Ontario, Gwinnett, Cincinnati and Las Vegas) is in the top half.

The Stingrays are 16th (3,042).

The Wheeling (W.Va.) Nailers are 19th and up for sale.

?I think it?s good for the league overall to have places like Chicago and San Francisco come in,? Stingrays president Rob Concannon said. ?But I hope we also get some teams below the Mason-Dixon Line to help our division specifically. You hear rumors but I would love to see Columbia come back into the ECHL and give some unity to our division.?

Shorter bus rides, too.

?Wayne?s World? tilt

?There are challenges playing in Chicago, but at the same time it offers us a chance to cut out a niche,? said Express radio broadcaster Bob Mills. ?When you?re fighting with the Blackhawks and Bulls, it?s tough. But you don?t see NHL and NBA and Major League Baseball players connecting with fans the way our guys do.?

Stingrays fans have loved that about their team since the first puck dropped in 1993.

Chicago hockey history includes former Blackhawks stars Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull and Tony Esposito, plus the fictional Stan Mikita?s Donut Shop of ?Wayne?s World? fame.

They have the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

We have Shem Creek and lots of cool historical stuff.

Notably, the big-city guys lace up their skates the same way the Stingrays do, and the Express just got into to town after a 16-hour sleeper bus ride from Chicago.

Tonight, the ECHL edge has to go to the franchise with three Kelly Cup championships.

New mental health manual is "dangerous" say experts (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) - Millions of healthy people ? including shy or defiant children, grieving relatives and people with fetishes - may be wrongly labeled mentally ill by a new international diagnostic manual, specialists said on Thursday.

In a damning analysis of an upcoming revision of the influential Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), psychologists, psychiatrists and other experts said new categories of mental illness identified in the book were at best "silly" and at worst "worrying and dangerous."

"Many people who are shy, bereaved, eccentric, or have unconventional romantic lives will suddenly find themselves labeled as mentally ill," said Peter Kinderman, head of Liverpool University's Institute of Psychology at a briefing in London about widespread concerns over the manual.

"It's not humane, it's not scientific, and it won't help decide what help a person needs."

The DSM is published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and has symptoms and other criteria for diagnosing mental disorders. It is used internationally and seen as the diagnostic "bible" for mental health medicine.

No one from the APA was immediately available for comment.

More than 11,000 health professionals have already signed a petition (at http://dsm5-reform.com) calling for the development of the fifth edition of the manual to be halted and re-thought.

Some diagnoses - for conditions like "oppositional defiant disorder" and "apathy syndrome" - risk devaluing the seriousness of mental illness and medical zing behaviors most people would consider normal or just mildly eccentric, the experts said.

At the other end of the spectrum, the new DSM, due out next year, could give medical diagnoses for serial rapists and sex abusers - under labels like "paraphilic coercive disorder" - and may allow offenders to escape prison by providing what could be seen as an excuse for their behavior, they added.

RADICAL, RECKLESS, AND INHUMANE

Simon Wessely of the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London said a look back at history should make health experts ask themselves: "Do we need all these labels?"

He said the 1840 Census of the United States included just one category for mental disorder, but by 1917 the APA was already recognizing 59. That rose to 128 in 1959, to 227 in 1980, and again to around 350 disorders in the fastest revisions of DSM in 1994 and 2000.

Allen Frances of Duke University and chair of the committee that oversaw the previous DSM revision, said DSM-5 would "radically and recklessly expand the boundaries of psychiatry" and result in the "lexicalization of normality, individual difference, and criminality."

David Pilgrim of Britain's University of Central Lancashire said it was "hard to avoid the conclusion that DSM-5 will help the interests of the drug companies."

"Madness and misery exist but they come in many shapes and sizes," he said. "We risk treating the experience and conduct of people as if they are botanical specimens waiting to be identified and categorized in rigid boxes.

"That would itself be a form of collective madness for all those complicit in the continuing pseudo-scientific exercise."

Nick Craddock of Cardiff University's department of psychological medicine and neurology, who also spoke at the London briefing, cited depression as a key example of where DSM's broad categories were going wrong.

Whereas in previous editions, a person who had recently lost a loved one and was suffering low moods would be seen as experiencing a normal human reaction to bereavement, the new DSM criteria would ignore the death, look only at the symptoms, and class the person as having a depressive illness.

Other examples of diagnoses cited by experts as problematic included "gambling disorder," "internet addiction disorder" and "oppositional defiant disorder" - a condition in which a child "actively refuses to comply with majority's requests" and "performs deliberate actions to annoy others."

"That basically means children who say 'no' to their parents more than a certain number of times," Kinderman said. "On that criteria, many of us would have to say our children are mentally ill."

(AP) ? When it started, American teenagers were doing "The Twist." The United States had yet to put a man into orbit around the Earth. And a first-class U.S. postage stamp cost 4 cents.

The world is much changed since the early days of 1962, but one thing has remained constant: The U.S. economic embargo on communist-run Cuba, a near-total trade ban that turned 50 on Tuesday.

Supporters say it is a justified measure against a repressive government that has never stopped being a thorn in Washington's side. Critics call it a failed policy that has hurt ordinary Cubans instead of the government.

All acknowledge that it has not accomplished its core mission of toppling Fidel and Raul Castro.

"All this time has gone by, and yet we keep it in place," said Wayne Smith, who was a young U.S. diplomat in Havana in 1961 when relations were severed and who returned as the chief American diplomat after they were partially re-established under President Jimmy Carter.

"We talk to the Russians, we talk to the Chinese, we have normal relations even with Vietnam. We trade with all of them," Smith said. "So why not with Cuba?"

In the White House, the first sign of the looming embargo came when President John F. Kennedy told his press secretary to go buy him as many H. Upmann Cuban cigars as he could find. The aide came back with 1,200 stogies.

Kennedy announced the embargo on Feb. 3, 1962, citing "the subversive offensive of Sino-Soviet communism with which the government of Cuba is publicly aligned."

It went into effect four days later at the height of the Cold War, a year removed from the failed CIA-backed Bay of Pigs invasion meant to oust communism from Cuba and eight months before Soviet attempts to put nuclear missiles on the island brought the two superpowers to the brink of war.

Washington already had some limited sanctions in place, but Kennedy's decision was the beginning of a comprehensive ban on U.S. trade with the island that has remained more or less intact ever since.

Little was planned to mark Tuesday's anniversary, but Cuban-American members of Congress issued a joint statement vowing to keep the heat on Cuba.

Supporters of the policy acknowledge that many U.S. strategic concerns from the 1960s have been consigned to the dustbin of history, such as halting the spread of Soviet influence and keeping Fidel Castro from exporting revolution throughout Latin America. But they say other justifications remain, such as the confiscation of U.S. property in Cuba and the need to press for greater political and personal freedoms on the island.

"We have a hemispheric commitment to freedom and democracy and respect for human rights," said Jose Cardenas, a former National Security Council staffer on Cuba under President George W. Bush. "I still think that those are worthy aspirations."

With just 90 miles (145 kilometers) of sea between Florida and Cuba, the United States would be a natural No. 1 trade partner and source of tourism. But the embargo chokes off most commerce, and the threat of stiff fines keeps most Americans from sunbathing in balmy resorts like Cayo Coco.

Cuba is free to trade with other nations, but the U.S. threatens sanctions against foreign companies that don't abide by its restrictions. A stark example arrived off the coast of Havana last month: A massive oil exploration rig built with less than 10 percent U.S. parts to qualify under the embargo was brought all the way from Singapore at great expense, while comparable platforms sat idle in U.S. waters just across the Gulf of Mexico.

The embargo is a constant talking point for island authorities, who blame it for shortages of everything from medical equipment to the concrete needed to complete an eight-lane highway spanning the length of the island. Cuba frequently fulminates against the "blockade" at the United Nations and demands the U.S. end its "genocidal" policy.

Every fall, like clockwork, the vast majority of nations agree, and overwhelmingly back a resolution condemning the embargo. In November, 186 countries supported the measure, with only Israel joining the U.S. in opposition.

Also each year, Cuba updates its estimate of how much the embargo has cost it, using a complicated ? and some say flawed ? calculus that takes into account years of interest, the end of the gold standard and other factors. Last year's estimate summing 49 years of sanctions was $975 billion.

Even some critics of the embargo call Havana's claims exaggerated, saying that while the sanctions had a tremendous impact when first put in place, Cuba was able to adapt and benefited from relationships with like-minded allies such as the former Soviet Union and Venezuela.

"There's no doubt that the embargo is detrimental to the Cuban economy. It complicates international financial transactions, but more importantly, it limits Cuban families' access to medicine," said Geoff Thale, a Cuba analyst at the Washington Office on Latin America, which supports ending the policy. "At the same time, Cuba's economic problems go beyond the embargo."

While 50 years of socialism have brought advancements in areas such as education and health care, even island authorities acknowledge their perennially struggling economic system must change. President Raul Castro is in the process of allowing more private-sector activity, decentralizing state-run businesses, implementing agricultural reform and slimming government payrolls.

The United States actually does have significant trade with Cuba under a clause allowing the sale of food products and some pharmaceuticals.

According to the most recent information available from Cuba's National Statistics Office, the U.S. was the island's seventh-largest trading partner in 2010, selling $410 million in mostly food products. However, that was down from nearly $1 billion in 2008, as the island increasingly turned to other countries that don't force it to pay cash up front.

Many U.S. businesses would love to be allowed into the Cuban market, but an end to the embargo seems a long way off.

The issue is seen as a political nonstarter in the United States, where every four years, presidential candidates take turns courting the Cuban-American vote in Florida, a key swing state.

President Barack Obama has said Raul Castro's economic openings are insufficient, and it's unlikely he would do anything in an election year to risk losing support in Florida, which he won in 2008. Even if he wanted to lift the embargo, the Helms-Burton Act of 1996 stipulates that it would have to be approved by Congress.

Raul Castro, for his part, says recent changes in the U.S. such as allowing Cuban-Americans to visit relatives more often and send them more money are merely cosmetic.

Backers of the sanctions say it's as important as ever to maintain what they call the moral high ground, saying islanders will be grateful whenever change does come.

Critics cite the annual U.N. votes to argue that times have changed and the embargo is a Cold War relic that ought to be thrown onto the scrap heap.

"It's no longer a matter of the United States leading a movement to isolate Cuba in the hemisphere," said Smith, a staunch opponent of the embargo. "Quite the contrary: If anyone's isolated, on this issue anyway, it's us."

'Penny Plan' to get finances in order (Politico)

Today, we face the most predictable ? and preventable ? crisis in American history. Consider the flashing warning signs: The U.S. has accumulated more than $5 trillion in new debt in less than four years; total debt recently surpassed our country?s gross domestic product (more than $15 trillion), and the Congressional Budget Office forecasts that 2012 will be the fourth consecutive year of more than $1 trillion federal budget deficits.

There is no end in sight ? unless we change direction.

After a tumultuous 2011, Congress and the White House still face the same challenge ? to find a responsible, bipartisan way to reduce deficits by cutting spending. The 1 Percent Spending Reduction Act, or ?Penny Plan,? which I co-sponsored, illustrates how a modest, common-sense approach could be used to put our financial house in order.

The Penny Plan would reduce total federal spending 1 percent per year for six years. In the seventh year and thereafter, overall spending would be capped at 18 percent of the GDP.

Of course, not every program would be cut. But Congress would need to set budget priorities and cap annual spending by 1 percent overall.

Why stabilize spending at 18 percent of GDP? First, this is the average percentage of tax revenue as a portion of GDP since World War II. In contrast, federal spending has skyrocketed in recent years to a stratospheric 24 percent of GDP. Second, tax revenues are also expected to return to about 18 percent of GDP as our economy regains strength in coming years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. If spending is capped permanently at 18 percent of GDP, balanced budgets would follow.

Under the Penny Plan, if Congress and the White House fail to agree on the required 1 percent annual reduction in total spending, automatic, across-the-board spending cuts would be triggered. This can put constructive pressure on the president and members of Congress to do the jobs they were elected to do ? and put our nation?s financial house back in order.

The Penny Plan is not based on any political ideology but, rather, on the everyday common sense in every American home. When a family budget must be tightened, the adults figure out how to reduce spending by 1 percent per year. A little of that kind of reasonableness and discipline is what is needed to restore financial responsibility in Washington.

Continuing on our current path of record deficits is reckless and unacceptable. It assures that our weak economy will remain weak and that unemployment will stay at historically high levels. The fiscal status quo also keeps Social Security and Medicare on course for bankruptcy in the years ahead, threatening the financial security and health care of tens of millions of current and future retirees.

The Penny Plan ? reasonable, nonideological and fair ? is a way for Congress and President Barack Obama to come together to ensure that the federal government stops spending money it doesn?t have ? the most critical investment we can make in our future.

Combine that practical approach to financial responsibility with pro-growth tax reforms and sensible regulatory restraint, and we?ll get our economy moving. Millions of unemployed Americans will again be able to find work to support their families and communities. And America can get back on the right track.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) serves on the Appropriations Committee.

Risk Management in Stock Trading | Talk About Business ...

There is a scene in the movie Wall Street where Daryl Hannah says ?Having had the money and loosing it all on the Wall Street is worse than not having had it at all? This sums up the risk associated with investing in the Stock Market. Risk Management is one of the integral parts of investing in the stock market. Some of the key strategies of risk management are:

Splitting the fund into various asset classes. One should never stack the eggs in the same basket .To minimize risk one should split the available money into different classes of assets like fixed deposits, properties, mutual funds etc. Similarly, while investing in stock market one should try to diversify one?s portfolio i.e. put money into different stocks.

Having an astute sense of discipline. A rising stock prices have a prospect of rising more and hence increasing the profits.

But there always the perils of the market changing course and the net profit at any moment profit position becoming a loss position. The stock investor should have a discipline in setting targets and adhering to those. For example he could decide something like:

- Sell the stock if the loss exceeds 10 percent i.e. keeping the stop loss at 10 percent.
- Sell 50 percent of the stocks when prices rise 10 percent from the buy price.
- Sell additional 25 percent when the gains become 15 percent.

Greed is one of the main enemies of a stock investor. If an investor sees a stock advancing he adopts a wait and watch strategy to maximize the profits. He finally ends up in making a loss. One has to remember half a penny earned is better than a penny lost.

Proper research of companies in which the investor is intending to invest.Apart from complex technical indicators (RSI, MACD, etc) one must try to analyze the performance by finding answers to some basic information concerning the fundaments of a company(which does not require any expertise into Finance):

- What is the growth rate of the company in comparison to the overall industrial growth rate?
- What is the growth rate of the company vis-?-vis other companies into the same line of business? I.e.

whether it is outperforming or underperforming with regard to its competitors.
- What is the performance of the company in the last five years? Whether it has shown a consistent growth record?
- What are the company?s expansion plans?
- Is the company planning to foray into newer markets?

The answer to these basic questions can help the investor in selecting the right companies to invest in. The companies that have given consistent returns over last 5 years and plan to continue the trend by foraying into new markets and constantly expanding are the right companies to invest in.

Hedging by limiting the losses. Hedging is the technique wherein investor tries to protect himself against adverse price movements. This is by simultaneously investing in the cash market and also taking opposite positions in the futures and options market. For example buying 100shares of company A@/share. Simultaneously one buys ?put options? of strike price 35 at 0.25/option i.e. .This means by paying one has secured ones position (to some extend). If the price of stock goes below . Hedging would be clearer once the concepts of futures and options are clear.

Thus risk management involves qualitative tools like self restraint discipline and quantitative tools like portfolio allocation hedging techniques to alleviate the risk associated with investing in stock markets.

Google, Facebook remove content on India's order

Internet giants Google and Facebook removed content from some Indian domain websites on Monday following a court directive warning them of a crackdown "like China" if they did not take steps to protect religious sensibilities.

The two are among 21 companies asked to develop a mechanism to block objectionable material after a private petitioner took them to court over images deemed offensive to Hindus, Muslims and Christians.

The case has stoked fears about censorship in the world's largest democracy.

"(Our) review team has looked at the content and disabled this content from the local domains of search, Youtube and Blogger," Google spokeswoman Paroma Roy Chowdhury said.

At the heart of the dispute is a law that India passed last year making companies responsible for user content posted on their web sites, and giving them 36 hours to take down content if there's a complaint.

Last month, the companies said it was not possible for them to block content. Google's Roy Chowdhury declined to comment on what had since been removed, and a Facebook representative said only that the company would release a statement later.

A lower court in New Delhi told the companies on Monday to put in writing the steps they had taken to block offensive content, and submit reports to the court within 15 days.

Google, Facebook, Yahoo! and Microsoft have appealed in the Delhi High Court against a criminal case successfully brought by a Hindu petitioner. A civil case against them has been brought to a lower court by a Muslim petitioner.

"If the companies have actually removed some content, they should put in place a mechanism to do it regularly, instead of waiting for a court case every time," Vinay Rai, the Hindu petitioner, told Reuters.

"Microsoft has filed an application for rejection of the suit on the grounds that it disclosed no cause of action against Microsoft," a spokesperson for the company said. "The matter is sub judice and no further comments can be given."

Fewer than one in 10 of India's 1.2 billion population has access to the Internet, but that still makes it the third-biggest Internet market after China and the United States. The number of Internet users in India is expected to almost triple to 300 million over the next three years.

Despite the new rules to block offensive content, India's Internet access is still largely uncensored, in contrast to the tight controls in neighboring China.

While civil rights groups have opposed the new laws, politicians say posting offensive images in a socially conservative country, which has a history of violence between religious groups, presents a danger to the public.

Latest illnesses point to raw milk's popularity

The Family Cow facility is seen, Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 in Scotland, Pa. Pennsylvania health officials say the number of people stricken with illness after consuming raw milk from the same dairy has risen to 35 in four states. The confirmed cases of campylobacter bacterial infection include 28 people in Pennsylvania, four in Maryland, two in West Virginia, and one in New Jersey. Health officials said Thursday consumers should discard raw milk bought from the Family Cow farm. The farm has voluntarily suspended raw milk production. (AP Photo/Public Opinion, Markell DeLoatch) HERALD-MAIL OUT; THE RECORD HERALD OUT

(AP) ? An outbreak of bacterial infections on the East Coast illustrates the popularity of raw, unpasteurized milk despite strong warnings from public health officials about the potential danger.

Even presidential candidate Ron Paul has joined the cause of consumers looking to buy unprocessed "real foods" straight from the farm, saying government shouldn't deny them that choice.

An outbreak of campylobacter illness is a reminder of the potential hazards, however. Raw milk from a dairy in Pennsylvania is now linked to 38 cases in four states, and the farm has temporarily suspended sales. Campylobacter can cause diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever and can be life-threatening if it spreads to the bloodstream.

Consumers who want unpasteurized milk have to work to find it. It's against federal law to transport it across state lines, and most states don't allow it to be sold in stores off the farm. Twenty states prohibit raw milk sales altogether.

The government says the milk is unsafe because of the pathogens cows may encounter on the farm. A wide variety of pathogens besides campylobacter, can be found in raw milk ? including salmonella, listeria, E. coli and others ? and those sickened could suffer from stroke, kidney failure, paralysis or death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency points out that raw milk killed many people ? especially young children ? before the onset of pasteurization, which kills disease-causing germs by heating milk to high temperatures for a specific period of time.

The CDC says pasteurized milk is rich in proteins, carbohydrates and other nutrients, and that heat only slightly decreases thiamine, vitamin B12, and vitamin C.

While the government contends that milk is a minor source of those nutrients, raw milk advocates say that's proof that pasteurization makes milk less wholesome and pure.

The government doesn't keep records of raw milk consumption or sales, but it's clear that the product is popularized by a larger food movement that encourages less processing and more "real food." Raw milk goes a step further than organic milk free of added growth hormones. Organic milk, too, has enjoyed a sales boost in recent years.

"We are pushing for consumer choice and freedom and a variety of dairy options for people," said Kimberly Hartke of the Weston A. Price Foundation, an activist group that advocates "restoring nutrient-dense foods to the human diet." Price was a dentist who studied global nutrition around the turn of the 20th century.

Advocates say far more illnesses are caused each year by leafy greens, deli meats and other products produced in much larger quantities than raw milk.

"To outlaw or ban any natural food because it could possibly make you sick is an extreme position, because there is no safe food," Hartke said.

That's a position that presidential contender Paul, a physician, understands. He appears to have acknowledged the potential risks of raw milk when he said last summer that "what I'm doing in politics is not exactly the medical opinion."

Still, he said, "as long as you don't force other people, and as long as you don't defraud people, you ought to have a choice."

Supporters of raw milk are passionate, and the issue has become one of the most animated food debates. Raw milk consumers and Price foundation representatives have held protests in Washington to fight Food and Drug Administration crackdowns on some farms that sell raw milk.

The fact that there's even a debate infuriates many in the public health community.

"The intensity with which raw milk supporters believe in this product is almost unheard of, certainly for a food," said Sarah Klein, an attorney for the Center for Science in the Public Interest. "It's like snake oil."

Klein says advocates often mislead consumers by describing bucolic settings and happy cows.

"These are still animals; they defecate inches from where the milk is produced," she said. "They stand in it, they swat their tails through it. That's all very natural. It's just a matter of course that raw milk is contaminated."

The owner of the Pennsylvania dairy, Your Family Cow farm in Chambersburg, posted a message on the farm's website last week saying that several customers had called them to say they had been experiencing "acute diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps."

Owner Edwin Shank said in the posting that the farm's testing had shown samples to be negative for campylobacter and speculated that the illnesses may be from another cause. But the Pennsylvania health department has linked the outbreak to the farm, and a spokeswoman for the Maryland's health department says an unopened bottle from the farm tested positive for campylobacter.

Raw milk sales are illegal in Maryland, but the state has four illnesses from the outbreak. Those sickened presumably drove to Pennsylvania and brought the milk back for their own consumption, said Maria Said of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

One person is also sick in New Jersey and two in West Virginia, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Thirty one people are sick in Pennsylvania, many of them in Franklin County, where the farm is located.

Pennsylvania has had at least seven disease outbreaks linked to raw milk consumption since 2006, involving almost 200 people, according to the health department. Pennsylvania is one of 17 states where some type of raw milk sales are allowed, according to the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture.
