(AP) ? A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.

The study of the world's surface temperatures by Richard Muller was partially bankrolled by a foundation connected to global warming deniers. He pursued long-held skeptic theories in analyzing the data. He was spurred to action because of "Climategate," a British scandal involving hacked emails of scientists.

Yet he found that the land is 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) warmer than in the 1950s. Those numbers from Muller, who works at the University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, match those by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA.

He said he went even further back, studying readings from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. His ultimate finding of a warming world, to be presented at a conference Monday, is no different from what mainstream climate scientists have been saying for decades.

What's different, and why everyone from opinion columnists to cable TV 's satirical"The Daily Show" is paying attention is who is behind the study.

One-quarter of the $600,000 to do the research came from the Charles Koch Foundation, whose founder is a major funder of skeptic groups and the conservative tea party movement. The Koch brothers, Charles and David, run a large privately held company involved in oil and other industries, producing sizable greenhouse gas emissions.

Muller's research team carefully examined two chief criticisms by skeptics. One is that weather stations are unreliable; the other is that cities, which create heat islands, were skewing the temperature analysis.

"The skeptics raised valid points and everybody should have been a skeptic two years ago," Muller said in a telephone interview. "And now we have confidence that the temperature rise that had previously been reported had been done without bias."

Muller said that he came into the study "with a proper skepticism," something scientists "should always have. I was somewhat bothered by the fact that there was not enough skepticism" before.

There is no reason now to be a skeptic about steadily increasing temperatures, Muller wrote recently in The Wall Street Journal's editorial pages, a place friendly to climate change skeptics. Muller did not address in his research the cause of global warming. The overwhelming majority of climate scientists say it's man-made from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Nor did his study look at ocean warming, future warming and how much of a threat to mankind climate change might be.

Still, Muller said it makes sense to reduce the carbon dioxide created by fossil fuels.

"Greenhouse gases could have a disastrous impact on the world," he said. Still, he contends that threat is not as proven as the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says it is.

On Monday, Muller was taking his results ? four separate papers that are not yet published or peer-reviewed, but will be, he says ? to a conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, expected to include many prominent skeptics as well as mainstream scientists.

"Of course he'll be welcome," said Petr Chylek of Los Alamos National Lab, a noted skeptic and the conference organizer. "The purpose of our conference is to bring people with different views on climate together, so they can talk and clarify things."

Shawn Lawrence Otto, author of the book "Fool Me Twice" that criticizes science skeptics, said Muller should expect to be harshly treated by global warming deniers. "Now he's considered a traitor. For the skeptic community, this isn't about data or fact. It's about team sports. He's been traded to the Indians. He's playing for the wrong team now."

And that started on Sunday, when a British newspaper said one of Muller's co-authors, Georgia Tech climate scientist Judith Curry, accused Muller of another Climategate-like scandal and trying to "hide the decline" of recent global temperatures.

The Associated Press contacted Curry on Sunday afternoon and she said in an email that Muller and colleagues "are not hiding any data or otherwise engaging in any scientifically questionable practice."

The Muller "results unambiguously show an increase in surface temperature since 1960," Curry wrote Sunday. She said she disagreed with Muller's public relations efforts and some public comments from Muller about there no longer being a need for skepticism.

Muller's study found that skeptics' concerns about poor weather station quality didn't skew the results of his analysis because temperature increases rose similarly in reliable and unreliable weather stations. He also found that while there is an urban heat island effect making cities warmer, rural areas, which are more abundant, are warming, too.

Among many climate scientists, the reaction was somewhat of a yawn.

"After lots of work he found exactly what was already known and accepted in the climate community," said Jerry North, a Texas A&M University atmospheric sciences professor who headed a National Academy of Sciences climate science review in 2006. "I am hoping their study will have a positive impact. But some folks will never change."

Chris Field, a Carnegie Institution scientist who is chief author of an upcoming intergovernmental climate change report, said Muller's study "may help the world's citizens focus less on whether climate change is real and more on smart options for addressing it."

Some of the most noted scientific skeptics are no longer saying the world isn't warming. Instead, they question how much of it is man-made, view it as less a threat and argue it's too expensive to do something about, Otto said.

Skeptical MIT scientist Richard Lindzen said it is a fact and nothing new that global average temperatures have been rising since 1950, as Muller shows. "It's hard to see how any serious scientist (skeptical, denier or believer ? frequently depending on the exact question) will view it otherwise," he wrote in an email.

In a brief email statement, the Koch Foundation noted that Muller's team didn't examine ocean temperature or the cause of warming and said it will continue to fund such research. "The project is ongoing and entering peer review, and we're proud to support this strong, transparent research," said foundation spokeswoman Tonya Mullins.

Suspect that prompted SC schools lockdown arrested (AP)

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? A gunman who authorities said fired on a South Carolina police officer checking on a suspicious license plate and caused 10 schools to go on lockdown was arrested Friday.

Patrick Dean Lowrance was found in a Greenville apartment. He was shot in the shoulder when the officer fired back and was taken to the hospital for treatment, Greenville County deputies said.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. at a different apartment complex, Greenville police spokeswoman Alia Urps said.

After being shot, the suspect ran into nearby woods. Several dozen officers who happened to be in a training session nearby rushed to help search, along with teams of dogs, authorities said.

The search went on for more than three hours before investigators determined Lowrance got someone to pick him up. The schools reopened their doors before dismissal.

Authorities did not say what hospital Lowrance was taken to. They did not know if he had an attorney.

The shooting happened after an officer checking license plates in a hotel parking lot found that a plate on a GMC Yukon was listed for a Honda, Urps said. When the officer went inside the hotel to inquire about the driver, the suspect drove off in the SUV.

The officer got into her patrol car and tried to pull the suspect over on Interstate 85, but he sped up, and she abandoned the chase, Urps said.

"We do not pursue for minor traffic infractions, and at that point, that's all that we had," she said.

Another officer found the vehicle in an apartment parking lot, and as she approached the building, the suspect shot at her, police said.

The SUV was stolen in a carjacking three weeks ago in a motel parking lot in Spartanburg, a city about 30 miles east, police said.

Lowrance, 25, was wanted on four counts of attempted murder and other charges after he tried to rob a fast-food restaurant in Greenville last Sunday, authorities said.

Investigators said Lowrance came into the restaurant after closing time and demanded three workers to open the safe. The employees told him only the manager had the combination and she was outside.

The gunman forced the workers outside, where the manager was in her car, trying to drive off. The suspect fired at the car, then demanded that the employees go back inside. But they told him the door locked behind them automatically and Lowrance fired his gun again at them as they ran away. No one was injured, authorities said.

After Friday's shooting, four public schools, three private schools, two colleges and a special education center were placed on lockdown.

Schools were locked down in several directions because officers weren't sure where the suspect went.

"This is not around the corner from a school. I don't want to give you that impression. This is several miles from any of our schools," Oby Lyles, spokesman for Greenville County school district, told The Associated Press. "Everybody's fine."

Can I be a female for camp jupiter?
Can she be the daughter of Artemis?

Am I crazy? Well, that depends. Define crazy.

Umm. Artemis can't have a daughter. She's the Goddess of Maidens. She has a troop of hunters, however.
Of course, it is the GM's choice.
I'd like a daughter of Ares, Half-Blood camp. I think.

Could I reserve a boy for Camp Half-blood, the son of Hera?

Hera is the Goddess of Marriage. She wouldn't cheat on Zeus. Her only children are gods, and children of Hera and Zeus.

Can I reserve a spot for camp half-blood? I'm thinking the daughter of Hephaestus.

@Rhyme: Actually she had Hephaestus by herself to spite him in many accounts. I was thinking that my character could be another instance of this. And while it's true that she's the goddess of marriage, I figure it's not that big of a deal since this is a roleplay.

Assistant Iowa Attorney General Doug Hammerand presents opening arguments Wednesday morning Oct. 26, 2011 in Webster County District Court in the first-degree murder trial of Tracey Richter in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Richter, 45, is accused of shooting Dustin Wehde, of Early, Iowa on Dec. 13, 2001. (AP Photo/The Messenger, Hans Madsen)

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) ? Prosecutors called their star witness Friday in the murder trial of a woman who claims she killed an Iowa neighbor in self-defense: a former close friend who initially believed her account but came forward a decade later to provide key evidence against her.

Farmer Mary Higgins provided critical testimony to back up the prosecution's claim that Tracey Richter killed 20-year-old Dustin Wehde in a plot to frame her ex-husband and then falsely claimed she was the victim of a home invasion.

Richter has insisted the shooting at her home in Early, a small town in northwest Iowa, was in self-defense after Wehde and another man broke into her home.

Higgins described herself as a reluctant witness who once enjoyed Richter's company but later saw her as a dishonest woman who treated her children poorly and could explode in anger.

She said she and Richter became friends after Richter and her second husband moved to Early in 1998. They often spoke on the phone, had coffee together and she drove Richter's son home from school.

Richter flew to Australia for a planned family vacation days after Wehde was shot in December 2001. Higgins said they got together in January or February after she returned.

"I wanted to let her know that I stand by her," Higgins recalled.

But she said Richter showed no emotion and acted "like she was telling me her grocery list" when she recounted her version of events: that two men broke into her home and one choked her with pantyhose before she broke free, unlocked her gunsafe ? without her glasses in the dark ? grabbed two guns and shot Wehde while the other man fled.

Police never found a second intruder. Defense attorneys have suggested the second man was an ice cream delivery driver who was having an affair with Wehde's mother. The man, Iraq war veteran Jeremy Collins, testified Friday afternoon he had nothing to do with any home invasion and did not know Wehde well. Richter cried during his testimony and left the courtroom in tears.

Higgins said that while Richter was retelling her story, her 11-year-old son walked in and banged his head on the table.

"He said, 'Why did you go back up there?'" Higgins recalled. "'You didn't have to shoot him. You didn't have to kill him.'" Richter screamed her son's name, and he left.

Higgins said Richter told her police found a pink spiral notebook in Wehde's car and "it would prove that John Pitman did this." But two years later, in 2004, Higgins said Richter pointed her finger and "told me that I needed to forget about the pink notebook, and it frightened me. Tracey could explode and then be calm."

Law enforcement officials have testified they kept the notebook a secret until this year because anyone who knew about it would have knowledge of the crime. Prosecutors say Richter, now 45, forced Wehde to write the notebook claiming Pitman, her ex-husband, hired Wehde to kill her and their son. They say she killed Wehde to keep him quiet and then planted the notebook in his car.

Pitman, a Virginia plastic surgeon, testified earlier Friday that he had nothing to do with the notebook. Richter and Pitman were fighting at the time over custody of their son, Bert Pitman.

Higgins said she didn't tell a detective who interviewed her in April 2002 about the notebook because she assumed investigators knew about it and they did not ask her. She said she was contacted in March 2011 after investigators re-examined the case and her husband had become church friends with the new Sac County prosecutor, Ben Smith.

Smith met with her at their home, and she told him, "I didn't want any part of this." But when he asked if she knew about details, she responded, "Do you mean that stupid notebook?"

"The blood drained from his face," she testified. "I'd never seen anything like that before. He just went on the ground and sat on the floor and leaned against the kitchen cupboards."

Division of Criminal Investigation agents then interviewed her, and Higgins said she told them about the notebook but not share the full details because she was afraid for herself and Richter.

"She was my friend and I didn't know where it was going," she said. "I didn't know what the notebook meant. I knew it wasn't good."

She said she went into more detail in a second interview with investigators. She said she asked Richter why a 20-year-old man would have a pink notebook and Richter responded that Wehde must have gotten it from one of his sisters. Higgins also recalled how, months before the shooting, Richter told her about buying Bert a pink notebook for school, and Higgins said her sons would never use one like that.

Her statements and other evidence were used to draft a complaint charging Richter with murder and leading to her July arrest in Omaha, where she was living. Higgins occasionally glanced across the courtroom at Richter, who looked away during her testimony.

Prosecutor Douglas Hammerand gave jurors photocopies of the journal's five pages written in Wehde's sloppy handwriting, and they followed along as he read aloud. The journal said Wehde wanted to make a record of a "mysterious fellow who asked me to work for him (John Pitman)."

Pitman "wants me to get/force" Richter to kill Bert and then commit suicide, or "make it appear as though T.R. had committed the murder of her son & then committed suicide," it said.

Pitman testified the journal described him accurately: a doctor from Virginia who wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, also a surgeon, and take over his practice one day. The diary describes him as a white male in his 40s who was in the Army.

It named Pitman's divorce attorney, Stephen Komie. Only Richter and his family knew that much detail about his personal life, Pitman said, although he acknowledged on cross-examination that he had conflict with Richter's second husband, who could have gotten personal information about him from her.

The doctor said that he never met Wehde, did not hire him and did not want his son dead.

"Did your ex-wife Tracey Richter despise you?" Hammerand asked.

"I think so," Pitman responded with a laugh.

(AP) ? Steve Jobs told Walter Isaacson he wanted him to write his biography because he's good at getting people to talk. Jobs, it turns out, didn't need much prodding, secretive as he was about both his private life and the company he founded.

"I just listened," said Isaacson, whose book, "Steve Jobs" (Simon & Schuster) went on sale Monday. Jobs, who died Oct. 5 at 56 after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer, was a man full of deep contradictions, a product of 1960s counterculture who went on to found what is now the world's most valuable technology company, Apple Inc.

In an interview with The Associated Press Wednesday, Isaacson said Jobs was a compelling storyteller with "fascinating stories." Sometimes, the author would hear him tell those tales two or three times, often with slight variations. But through more than 40 conversations with Jobs, as well as interviews with his family, close friends, co-workers and rivals, Isaacson painted a rich portrait of a complex, sometimes conflicting figure.

Isaacson began work on the book in 2009 after Jobs' wife, Laurene Powell, told him that if he was "ever going to do a book on Steve, you'd better do it now." It was just after Jobs had taken his second medical leave as CEO of Apple, in January of that year. His third leave, which began in January 2011, would be his final one.

"He was not sick through much of this process," Isaacson said, when asked about what it was like to be working on the book and speaking with Jobs' family while he was ill.

"We took long walks," he said. "Every evening, he would have dinner around the kitchen table with his wife and kids. He didn't go out socializing or to black-tie dinners. He didn't travel much. Even though he was focused on his work, he was always home for dinner."

Those who see Jobs as the iconic CEO first might be surprised to read about his devotion to his family. It wasn't always evident. As a young man, Jobs denied paternity of his first daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, for years after Lisa was born in 1978. The two later reconciled.

Isaacson said he was most surprised by the intensity of Jobs' emotions.

"Sometimes I'd look up and there would be tears running down his cheek," Isaacson said.

Jobs told him he was always moved by "artistic purity." Sometimes, it was the design of a product, or even the creation of an advertisement that would move him to tears. Other times, it happened as he talked about a person who meant a lot to him. For his 20th wedding anniversary with Powell, Jobs wrote her a letter that he read to Isaacson from his iPhone. By the end, Isaacson said, he was crying uncontrollably.

"Years passed, kids came, good times, hard times, but never bad times," Jobs wrote in the note. "Our love and respect has endured and grown."

Those around Jobs referred to his ability to influence the perception of those around him as his "reality distortion field." Though on the surface it sounds similar, this was far more complex than someone who is lying or deluding himself. As Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak puts it in the book: "You realize that it can't be true, but he somehow makes it true."

The "reality distortion field" was Jobs' way of getting people to do what they thought was impossible, Isaacson said. An example was how he'd tell an engineer working on the Macintosh that he could save 10 seconds on the time the computer needed to boot up if he just wrote better code.

"And the guy would say 'no you can't,'" Isaacson said.

Jobs then asked the engineer if he could do it if it would save a life. And so the engineer did; he wrote better code and he shaved not 10 but 28 seconds off the Macintosh's boot-up time.

While writing the book, Isaacson said he came to understand the connection between Jobs' temperamental behavior and his artistic passion.

"I have a strong emotional respect for Steve," he said. "And it helped me put in perspective ... the tales of him being hard on people. Because I knew it was all in the context of getting people to do the impossible. Which he did."

Isaacson didn't spend time shadowing Jobs, though he did spend an afternoon at the design studio of Jony Ive, the chief designer at Apple who worked on the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. It was Ive who came up with the idea of making the first iPod, including its headphones, pure white. In the afternoons, Isaacson said Jobs would walk around Ive's studio and touch all the new prototypes that were laid out there.

"He was a very tactile person," Isaacson said. "He loved to fondle the prototypes."

Isaacson spent a long afternoon in that studio and doing so "realized what a serene experience it was. Quiet, with new-age jazz playing softly. The leaves from the trees outside casting dancing silhouette shadows on the tinted windows. And even small products like power adapters being lined up for inspections."

Can Apple continue to thrive without Jobs?

"Yeah, I think that his great creation was not any one product but a company in which creativity was connected to great engineering," Isaacson said. "And that will survive at least while the current people who trained under Steve are there."

With LSU, Bama on break, other contenders tussle

With the game of the year a week away, and No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama taking the weekend off, the other national championship contenders will be jostling for position behind the SEC superpowers on Saturday.

No. 3 Oklahoma State can either bury or buoy the Heisman hopes of Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, who is going to have to overcome his team's bad defense to pull off the type of upset that could make him a finalist.

No. 4 Stanford and No. 6 Clemson are both on the road against dangerous conference rivals.

Andrew Luck and the Cardinal are at No. 20 Southern California, which has run off three straight victories while scoring 109 points behind quarterback Matt Barkley and star receiver Robert Woods.

The Tigers go to Georgia Tech for what a few weeks ago looked as if it would be the Atlantic Coast Conference's game of the year.

The Yellow Jackets come in having lost two straight, but their option offense might still have enough pop to keep up with quarterback Tajh Boyd, freshman standout Sammy Watkins and the high-scoring Tigers.

Oklahoma State is third in the BCS standings and appears to have the inside track among that group to the BCS title game if it can stay perfect. Clemson is fifth and Stanford is sixth. Idle Boise State is fourth.

So while there's still plenty of time to thin the herd, the scoreboard watching can start this weekend.

The most surprising of the undefeated teams left, No. 10 Kansas State, is still lurking on the outside. The Wildcats were eighth in the last BCS standings, even behind one-loss Oregon, but we'll see if coach Bill Snyder's team can make a serious title run in the next few weeks ? starting Saturday at home against No. 11 Oklahoma.

The Sooners are coming off a 41-38 loss to Texas Tech, but they are still formidable.

Win that one and Kansas State's Nov. 5 road trip to Oklahoma State could be a battle of unbeatens with major championship implications.

Just like that big game over in Tucsaloosa, Ala., that same day.

The picks:

THURSDAY

Rice (plus 27?) at No. 18 Houston

Cougars: 'Hey, hey. We're unbeaten, too.' ... HOUSTON 55-21.

SATURDAY

Baylor (plus 14) at No. 3 Oklahoma State

If only RGIII could play defensive back, too ... OKLAHOMA STATE 62-31

No. 4 Stanford (minus 7?) at No. 20 Southern California

Cardinal offense is punishing and precise ... STANFORD 38-24.

UPSET SPECIAL

No. 6 Clemson (minus 3?) at Georgia Tech

Dabo-dacious Tigers can match speed with any team, but option is tricky ... GEORGIA TECH 37-34.

Washington State (plus 35?) at No. 7 Oregon

Ducks have won four straight vs. Cougars by average of 40 ... OREGON 54-14.

No. 8 Arkansas (minus 10) at Vanderbilt

Hogs QB Tyler Wilson leads SEC in passing by 52 yards ... ARKANSAS 35-21.

No. 9 Michigan State (plus 4) at No. 13 Nebraska

Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin; next up for Spartans ... MICHIGAN STATE 28-27.

No. 11 Oklahoma (minus 13?) at No. 10 Kansas State

Think Bob Stoops has Sooners attention now? ... OKLAHOMA 42-17.

No. 12 Wisconsin (minus 7) at Ohio State

Badgers beat No. 1 Buckeyes last season ... WISCONSIN 28-14.

No. 14 South Carolina (minus 4) at Tennessee

Ball Coach Spurrier still loves beating UT ... SOUTH CAROLINA 23-20.

No. 15 Virginia Tech (minus 15?) at Duke

Hokies in the lead for fifth ACC title game appearance ... VIRGINIA TECH 28-14.

Missouri (plus 11) at No. 16 Texas A&M

S-E-C, S-E-C, S-E-C ... TEXAS A&M 45-28.

Purdue (plus 13?) at No. 17 Michigan

With tough closing stretch, Wolverines cannot lose this one ... MICHIGAN 35-23.

Iowa State (plus 15) at No. 19 Texas Tech

Air Tubby? Auburn fans wondering where this came from ... TEXAS TECH 45-17.

Illinois (plus 5?) at No. 21 Penn State

New drug targets revealed from giant parasitic worm genome sequence

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Scientists have identified the genetic blueprint of the giant intestinal roundworm, Ascaris suum, revealing potential targets to control the devastating parasitic disease, ascariasis which affects more than one billion people in China, South East Asia, South America and parts of Africa, killing thousands of people annually and causing chronic effects in young children.

Dr Aaron Jex and Professor Robin Gasser from the University of Melbourne's Faculty of Veterinary Science led the international research project which was published in the journal Nature today [Oct. 27].

The work has provided new insights to treat the condition ascariasis, identified by the World Health Organization as a key, neglected disease in urgent need of extensive research and significantly improved control.

"Sequencing the genome of Ascaris suum is a major step towards controlling the infection it causes because the more we know about the genetics of the parasite and how it works, the better we can fight it with novel treatments," Dr Jex said.

"From the genome sequence we have identified five high priority drug targets that are likely to be relevant for many other parasitic worms. New treatments are urgently needed and genome-guided drug target discovery is ideal for identifying targets that selectively kill the parasite and not the host.

"We also identified key information on how the parasite hides from the immune system, which is essential for any future vaccine development."

The team sequenced the nuclear genome of Ascaris suum which is an easier worm to study in the laboratory and mainly only infects pigs, but is very closely related to Ascaris lumbricoides which causes ascariasis in humans. The worms range from 15-30cm in length and are spread via eggs in contaminated food.

Ascaris lumbricoides is one of the most common parasites of humans, affecting more than one billion people in developing countries, particularly children, causing impaired physical and cognitive development, and in severe cases death, due to lack of nutrient absorption and intestinal blockage.

Ascaris suum also causes major production losses in swine farming due to reduced growth, failure to thrive and mortality.

Why Nokia's Windows Phones Are Better Than Good Enough [Nokia]

Nokia just announced two gosh darn attractive Windows Phone handsets. The first "true" Windows Phones, the company says—and makes a pretty convincing case that they are. But rather than making everyone hot and bothered, Lumia seems to be leaving people cold. Here's why that's wrong. More »
